Social Media Talking Points

Google continues to make the headlines as it changes more core products to add Google Plus integration: Google Reader: redesigned and now with Google+ integration. Will Google's attempt to force G+ on all its users end up working?

Exactly how does "trending on twitter" decide what is trending and what isn't?

Who owns your linkedin contacts (the individual or their employer)?

Twitter stories - using multimedia to tell human stories about how twitter has improved life.

How the IT department will drive social media adoption.

Getting started with social media: measure, then create your presence, then encourage people to share your content

"News Transparency" site gives journalists a public profile, but does it go too far?

Mexican soccer team replaces player names with twitter handles

The Melbourne Cup, Gambling, and the Cognitive Surplus. What could we be doing with all that time spent watching horses?

UCM is back!

After a long hiatus, UCM will be meeting up again on Tuesdays at 10am, back in the newly refurbished ABC A One Café.

Starting: Tuesday 28th June, 2011 at 10am.

Come along to share experiences about social media with other people who work in Ultimo.

6th October meetup

If you weren't among the 6 people who came along to Ultimo Coffee Mornings in its new fortnightly, Wednesdays at 10am format, here's what you missed:

- Telstra study: 36% of Australian mobile phone users now have smartphones - http://www.telstra.com.au/abouttelstra/media-centre/announcements/new-study-c... [via http://howwemove.blogspot.com/2010/10/smartphone-is-our-new-mini-dog.html]
- On facebook, "likers" are more valuable than non-likers - http://www.facebook.com/notes/facebook-media/value-of-a-liker/150630338305797 [via http://wearesocial.net/blog/2010/10/socials-monday-mashup-43/]
- how do you do your social media monitoring?
- a linkedin case study where someone actually received a job offer (from an employer, not a recruiter) via linkedin
- http://academia.edu/ provides notifications of when people look for your work as an academic
- the strange order in which #newtwitter was rolled out
- what's the best iPhone app (tweetdeck is a bit too crashy, echofon, official twitter, hootsuite allows multi-site update but has a tough interface, twitterific, twitterlator, weet)
- what's the best way to teach twitter use to a novice, so they can work comfortably on an official twitter account
- twitter can be a good way of generating deep traffic to an opaque website
- differing viewpoints: should you use http://posterous.com/ to blast the same updates to every social channel (saving resources), or should you treat each channel differently, and attempt to engage in more conversations?

Hope to see you at our next meetup on the October 20th at ABC A One café.

24th August meetup

Thanks to the 5 people who came along to #ucm this week.

Topics discussed included:

10th August meetup

Looks like the weather deterred all but 2 people from making the journey down to the ABC A One café.

We still talked about a range of different topics:

·         The end of Google Wave development http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/08/update-on-google-wave.html

·         Election 2010: politicians have twitter accounts, but are they really using it for any more than broadcast?

·         GetUp are using social media to raise money for election ads https://www.getup.org.au/campaign/Australia_GetsUp_2010&id=1251 – are the major parties doing anything on this scale?

·         Brands are spending more on facebook advertising, but do we even notice the ads? http://econsultancy.com/blog/6383-facebook-expects-its-advertising-revenue-to-explode-this-year

·         Just how good is an iPhone 4 screen compared to a 3G screen? Does it make any difference to ebook reading?

·         Some iPhone / iPad apps: byki (language learning), meebo / palringo / fring (online chat), zinio (magazine reading)
